Belfast City Council
Belfast: Net Zero City

Tue 26th January 2021 - Tue 26th January 2021, Online

The next in Renewed Ambition’s series of events which are aimed at exploring the wider economic and investment opportunities for Belfast, this session will focus on Belfast’s sustainability ambitions and how we will drive a green recovery across the wider city region.

Despite the impact of the pandemic across many businesses, several of the city’s industries experienced growth; development of the Belfast Region City Deal continued apace; and, in December 2020, the city published its first Climate Plan. Integrating economic and climate strategy with the goal of transitioning to a zero emissions economy, the plan aims to achieve this through the delivery of a number of transformational projects which have been designed in partnership between key stakeholders across the city. A core feature of this work has been the development of a Net Zero Emissions Roadmap for the city which prioritises buildings and transport in the city’s decarbonisation pathway.

During this session, we will explore:

• How cities have integrated their economic and climate strategies to maximum effect and the lessons Belfast can learn as it moves from strategy to delivery.

• The growth in green finance – key considerations for Belfast as it develops its proposition to investors.

• Northern Ireland’s track record in energy transition – how can Belfast build on this success and what do we need from a future Energy Strategy?

• The potential for innovation – several companies have recently chosen Belfast as their destination due to its location, the strength of its skills base and the potential to grow. What does industry need to realise its ambitions in Belfast?
