Tell us about your background and your current role…

My PhD research investigated perceptions of resilience after flood events in Northern Ireland and England. Resilience is offered as an approach to assist the community to withstand and recover from the adverse impacts of a disaster event. However, a communities perception of resilience is frequently at odds with disaster management practitioners interpretation of resilience, meaning the voice of the community is often unheard during the decision making process. 

With regard to climate change what are the current issues facing your sector/area of expertise?

Ongoing research seeks to explore methods to facilitate community capacity and an evaluation of the role of urban design and masterplanning within a post–disaster flooding context.

With regard to climate change, what do you expect the future issues and solutions to be in your sector/area of expertise?

Increased urbanisation in vulnerable areas requiring sustainable long–term development strategies.
